Vice President Chen Chien-jen is set to visit the Vatican next week.

The foreign ministry said Chen will lead a delegation to attend the canonization ceremony of the Blessed John Henry Newman and four others. He will also meet Pope Francis during the four-day trip.

President Tsai Ing-wen has appointed Chen, a devout Catholic, to attend the ceremony to show how Taiwan values Catholicism and its ties with the Vatican. Chen’s visit is also an indication of the friendly ties that span 77 years between the two sides.

It will be the vice president’s third trip to the Holy See. Chen attended the canonization for Mother Teresa in 2016 and late Pope Paul VI in 2018.

The foreign ministry says ties between Taiwan and the Vatican are pretty stable.
