The opposition KMT says it does not accept China’s “one country, two systems” formula but is also opposed to Taiwan independence.

On Thursday, the party said that the Republic of China is an independent sovereignty, a fact that it said cannot be ignored. The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name. The KMT said that the country has its own national flag, national name, armed forces and laws.

The KMT also said it insists on the “1992 Consensus.” The consensus refers to a tacit agreement reached between Taiwan and China in 1992. Under the agreement, both sides across the Taiwan Strait agreed that there is only “one China” though each side may have its own interpretation of what that means.

Also on Thursday, KMT presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu promised to protect freedom and democracy, and promote cross-strait peace and stability if elected. The Kaohsiung mayor was speaking at a flag-raising ceremony held to mark the National Day. Han accused the ruling DPP of trying to gain an advantage by creating a sense that the country is doomed.

Taiwan is slated to hold its legislative and presidential elections in January next year.
