As National Day approaches, a team of students is undergoing rigorous training. They have been chosen as goodwill ambassadors, part of a team that serves as guides to visitors and makes sure the National Day ceremony goes smoothly.
In their training sessions, these guides are taught how to respond to just about any problem that may arise, even some worst-case scenarios.
Each year on National Day, a group of students from National Taipei University of Education becomes the face of the nation. These students look out for the needs of international visitors and foreign dignitaries and help ensure the National Day ceremony is a success.
Being selected for the team is both an honor and a challenge. Students must be ready for anything, and so they must undergo rigorous training- including a physical fitness regimen. They must also prepare for a range of crises and scenarios.
The most dreaded of worst-case scenarios seems to be a confrontation with protesters. This, too, is part of the training. One student plays a protester, demonstrating against social injustice.
In a calm tone, a student undergoing training responds: “[We] fully understand your needs. However, the ceremony is still in progress. To avoid affecting other dignitaries’ rights, there are people who will help you in the back, and I will show you the way.”
On a day when everything must go just right, these students will play an invaluable role.
