The foreign ministry says that 15 of Taiwan’s 17 diplomatic allies voiced support for Taiwan during the recent UN General Assembly debates.
The ministry said 12 allies spoke up directly on Taiwan’s behalf during the debates. Twelve allies — mostly the same countries — also signed a joint letter supporting Taiwan that was addressed to the UN secretary-general. Meanwhile, Latin American allies Nicaragua, Honduras, and Paraguay each sent an individual letter of support.
Only two allies did not voice support for Taiwan this year. One, the Vatican, is not a UN member. The other was Guatemala.
The foreign ministry has thanked Taiwan’s allies and the international community for supporting Taiwan’s efforts to participate in UN organizations. The ministry says Taiwan will continue to fulfill its international responsibilities and will work with its international partners to achieve the UN’s sustainable development goals.
