Close to 6,000 overseas Taiwanese are flying back to Taiwan to attend National Day celebrations.
Returning overseas Taiwanese began registering on October 5 to help as volunteers at the National Day on October 10. The first pair to sign up was a father and son from the US. They were presented with certificates and gifts for their dedication.
The Overseas Community Affairs Council said the overseas Taiwanese would also take time out for tourism, shopping and medical checkups. Therefore, the council is cooperating with the health ministry and the agriculture council for the first time to provide medical services and quality local products to the expatriates.
The council has prepared an array of activities including a national day banquet in Yilan, fireworks in Hualien, and a President’s Cup singing competition. Those who hold overseas Taiwanese ID cards can also get special discounts at over 400 shops and restaurants around the country.
