President Tsai Ing-wen says China’s attempt to isolate Taiwan in the international community is not conducive to regional stability. Tsai was speaking Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the Yushan Forum in Taipei.
Sponsored by the Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation, the forum is a platform for Asian dialogue for innovation and progress.
President Tsai urged like-minded countries to establish firmer partnerships with Taiwan and recognize Taiwan’s role in the Indo-Pacific region.
“Taiwan is willing and able to participate more actively in regional partnerships and contributions that can make the world a better place should never be subject to political pressures or blocked by unilateral coercion. China’s efforts to isolate Taiwan have done nothing but hinder regional prosperity and stability," said Tsai.
Participants of this year’s event include former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders and others. Scholars, officials and NGO representatives from countries targeted by the government’s New Southbound Policy are also attending.
The New Southbound Policy seeks closer ties with Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. It has been a centerpiece of Tsai’s foreign affairs agenda since she took office in 2016. Tsai said the policy has helped build mutual trust and created more opportunities for the region.
